Keeping Up In 2023

Norma Joyce Dougherty • Dec 31, 2022

Do you struggle ‘keeping up’ with the demands of life? Ohhh, how I remember those days.

I was always pursuing perfection, wanting the best for myself, my family and my life. So intentional doing everything just right, till one day, I woke up and realized I was actually paralyzed by my pursuit of perfection. Several reasons for the paralysis:

  • I knew I was not the perfect being I pretended to be.
  • I knew I could not, on my own, create the perfect life I was trying to create.
  • I knew I was filled with unhealthy stress, anxiety, and fear trying to keep up.
  • I knew I was holding onto guilt and shame over past mistakes, past failures.
  • I knew I was at my wit’s end and needed help.

Have you ever been there, feeling broken?

I felt like Humpty Dumpty and all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put me together again. That is, nothing in this world was able to fix the emptiness in my spirit, or the yearning in my heart.

They say that God’s address is at Wit’s End. All the twists and turns, all the detours in life brought me right to his doorstep. He said, “Welcome! It’s about time!” And then he invited me to get to know him - to plumb the depths of spiritual knowledge with him.

The invitation read like this:

“Call to me, and I will answer you. I will tell you great and mysterious things that you do not know.”
(Jeremiah 33:3 GW)

Being the critical thinker that I am, I wanted to learn all about these great and mighty things; I was so hungry for this spiritual knowledge. I didn’t realize how biblically illiterate I was until I started doing small group bible studies with my friends.

Over the years, I have learned many, many great and mighty things about God; things that are so valuable to the love, joy, peace and contentment I now experience in this life. So much so that I love to share them with others.

So here I am. I am not a biblical scholar, or a legalist, or someone who pushes my faith onto others. I have just learned precious life lessons worth sharing. Today’s lesson: LOOKING UP IS FAR MORE VALUABLE THAN KEEPING UP.

“I’m leaving you peace. I’m giving you my peace. I don’t give you the kind of peace that the world gives. So don’t be troubled .......” (John 14:7 GW).

We all have those dreams for something we feel is missing in our lives. We all visualize what life would be like if we were able to achieve or acquire that dream.

We can all learn to share God’s message, his good news with others. Why? Because we will know, believe and understand how great and valuable it is for each one of us…so valuable that we won’t be able to keep it to ourselves.

We don’t always guard our hearts do we? Our hearts can fill us with desires for things that may not be in our best interests; that may not even be in God’s will for our lives or reflect His best purpose and plan for our lives.
