The Confederation Bridge, from Prince Edward Island to the mainland in New Brunswick, Canada is one of the longest bridges in the world over ice covered waters. Whenever I cross this bridge, my adrenaline rushes and my heart palpitates because I am afraid of the height and the water below.
When the bridge is foggy, like it is in this picture captured by Stclair Macaulay, I wonder if I can trust that the bridge will go on or will it drop off somewhere along the eight mile route. Certainly a scary thought! Yet each time it happens, I have to make the hard decision to press on the gas pedal and keep going into the foggy unknown.
I have learned that this is the same with my faith. There are many times when I don’t know and I can’t see what is ahead of me. Yet I press on, trusting God to keep the path wide open, safe and secure for me and my loved ones. It is not always easy but He tells us in the Holy Book, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do” James 1: 5-8 (NIV).
I must believe and not doubt! I must be steady, steadfast and persistent in my faith! I must continue to TRUST that the bridge to faith; that is the cross of Christ, is secure, unfailing, truly fortified. I must press on believing that God’s wisdom and His promises are so powerful that I will not fall and be tossed about like a wave in the sea.
I can’t turn around on the bridge or even start to back up or I will appear to be double-minded and unstable. I must keep pressing on. We must all keep pressing on into the unknown trusting our Lord and Savior to guide us every step of the way.
