“Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who’s the fairest one of all?” Sibling rivalry? Not really. It’s just that growing up in a home with one mirror and six sisters, there always seemed to be a battle over getting “one last look in the mirror” before heading off to school or a special event. We wanted to make sure we had a nice image.
I admit, there were times when I stole longer periods in front of the mirror because I wanted to primp some more. That’s because each time I walked away from the mirror I would forget what I looked like. I didn’t realize that everyone forgets what they look like when he/she walks away from the mirror. I thought I was the only one! I thought God doesn’t want me/us to remember our image; otherwise, we might grow more prideful.
Yet there is one image that God DOES want us to remember. He wants us to remember that we are created in his image and he wants us to mirror his traits just like Jesus mirrored him. I remember Jesus saying, “I and the Father are one” and “anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” John 10:30 and John 14: 9b (NIV). They were one in so many regards that they mirrored each other….just like this image captured by Stclair Macaulay, photographer entitled Sunrise over Prince Edward Island. It is a beautiful display of how we are to mirror God in all his perfection and to be holy as he is holy. And that is the hard lesson for today…hard because it is not easy. Yet, we have the guidance and instruction we need…we must learn to adhere to it.
